Chapter 32

Everyone’s amped up after the talent show, energized by a heady combination of adrenaline and relief, and for a while, we mill around chatting and congratulating one another on being more than just astonishingly pretty faces. Eventually, the group breaks up and people wander off to do their own thing, Javi and Genevieve giggling as they scurry off as fast as humanly possible to celebrate his big win.

I return to the house to tidy up the kitchen after my baking adventures, and a few minutes later, Wes comes in with what remains of his drink-making set.

“Third place,” he remarks, putting dishes in the sink. “Could be worse.”

“Like fourth,” I agree. “Fourth place doesn’t even get a medal.”

His mouth quirks and he glances around to make sure we’re alone. “I’m never going to be able to look at Aladdin the same way,” he whispers.

“It was a very sexual performance.”

“And there was a lot of eye contact.” So I wasn’t the only one who noticed that Karly had turned the song into a staring contest, dividing her time equally between Wes and Brian with the occasional glance at me to gauge my reaction. I hadn’t had to feign confusion; it was a deeply confusing experience.

“Do you get the impression she wants to stir things up at the Re-Pairing Ceremony?” I ask.

“Absolutely. I think she’s been looking for reasons all season long and just hasn’t had the opportunity.”

“Same. It’s why I held Brian’s hand earlier.”

“Ah.” Wes nods. “I thought he just had soft hands. I mean, sometimes I hold them.”

I chuckle. “It was really pleasing.”

Wes smiles as he stirs himself a drink with the leftover simple syrup.

“I can’t believe you drew a penis on my glass,” I accuse.

“Be honest: If I didn’t do it, you would have.”

“Well, I am very crude.”

He sips his drink and looks at me over the rim of the glass. “I don’t mind.”

I snort. “You might be disappointed.”

“How do you figure?”

I keep smiling, even as nerves try to take hold. While Eddie dodged me as best he could following his abrupt departure from our wedding, he’d used the opportunity of one of our later meetings to emphasize that if I’d been more “adventurous,” he wouldn’t have had to turn to Dianna for excitement. Objectively, I knew he was only justifying his affair, but the words still stung. And may have somewhat influenced my decision to sign up for a show whose contract emphasized that they would take zero responsibility for my death or dismemberment before, during or after filming.

“I know it just seems like a thing I say at this point, but my assistant really did pack my suitcase.”

“Mm hmm.”

“So these aren’t things I’d wear in the real world. Or say. Or even think, for half of them.”

Wes arches a brow. “Are you saying you don’t want to taco ’bout getting together?”

“I’m serious,” I say, trying not to laugh.

He’s better than me at hiding his emotions, but I still see the dimple flash in his right cheek. “Me too,” he replies.
